Mass
The calibration entails a weight comparison from the scale readout against a known standard or mass value. The precision mass standards used for calibration are of a known accuracy.
Mass Standard
Calibration using the double or single substitution method as appropriate or Calibration using othagonal design by subdivision.
- Mass Pieces/weights < 100kg
Calibration using the single substitution method.
- Mass Pieces/weights < 1000kg
Weighing instruments
Evaluation of linearity, eccentricity and repeatability using standard weights.
- Digital Self-indicating
- Mechanical Self-indicating
- Weighing Instruments
- Comparators
- Semi Self-indicating
Volume
As was noted above, volumetric glassware is calibrated by measuring the mass of water that is contained- in or delivered-by the device. This mass data is then converted to volume data using the tabulated density of water (See Appendix) at the temperature of calibration.
Volume Dispensers
Calibration by the gravimetric method using distilled water.
- Piston Pipettes < 100 Microliters
- Syringes
- Piston Pipettes > 100 Microliters
Laboratory Glassware
Calibration by the gravimetric method using distilled or potable water.
- Automated Pipettes
- Pipettes & Burettes
- Flasks, Measuring Cylinders and Pycnometers
- Volume Dispensers
Simple Measures other than Glass
Calibration by the gravimetric method using distilled or potable water.
- Flasks, Measuring Cylinders and Pycnometers
Metal Measures
Calibration by the gravimetric method or using potable water.
- Metal Strike Measures
- Other Metal Standard Measures
Density
To find the density of any object, you need to know the Mass (grams) of the object, and its Volume (measured in mL or cm³). Divide the mass by the volume in order to get an object's Density.
Density of Solid
Calibration by immersion in water.
- Solid Density Artefact
Density of Liquid
Determined gravimetically using pyknometer method. The cuckow method by partial submersion in liquid.
- Liquid Density
- Density Measuring Device (Hydrometer)
